The 7-day Rongai Route Itinerary is one of the most scenic and less crowded routes for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. Approaching the mountain from the northern side near the Kenya–Tanzania border, the route offers a peaceful and more remote trekking experience compared to the busier southern routes.
Over seven days, the Rongai Route takes you through a variety of landscapes, from lush forests and moorlands to the high alpine desert and summit zone. The gradual ascent and additional acclimatization time allow your body to adjust to the increasing altitude and can improve your chances of reaching Uhuru Peak.
Known for its relatively gentle gradient, the Rongai Route is an excellent option for trekkers looking for a quieter and more manageable Kilimanjaro climbing experience. Along the way, you can enjoy beautiful views of the northern slopes, Kenya, and the surrounding mountain landscape.
The trek culminates at Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet). After reaching the summit, you descend via the Marangu Route, experiencing a different side of Mount Kilimanjaro.
With spectacular scenery, fewer crowds, gradual elevation gains, and a rewarding summit experience, the 7-day Rongai Route is an excellent choice for trekkers seeking a peaceful and unforgettable Kilimanjaro adventure.
If you have more time, consider pairing this climbing Kilimanjaro tour with a lifetime Tanzania safari tour or a relaxing holiday to Zanzibar to add to your Kilimanjaro trek!

Tips for guides, porters, and cooks
After an early breakfast, depart from Moshi and drive through scenic villages and coffee plantations to Rongai Gate, approximately 2–3 hours away. Upon arrival, complete the park registration and entry formalities while your mountain crew prepares the equipment and supplies.
Begin your trek along a wide trail passing through cultivated fields of maize and potatoes before entering the montane forest. The trail gradually ascends through a beautiful forest that provides shelter for a variety of wildlife and bird species.
As the forest becomes thinner, you will continue toward Simba Camp at approximately 2,750 m / 9,022 ft. From the camp, enjoy impressive views across the Kenyan plains before dinner and your first overnight stay on Mount Kilimanjaro.
After breakfast, begin a steady ascent toward the Second Cave area, where you will stop for lunch. From here, leave the main trail and continue along a quieter path across the moorland toward the Mawenzi side of Mount Kilimanjaro.
The landscape becomes increasingly open as you approach Kikelewa Camp, situated in a sheltered valley beneath the dramatic slopes of Mawenzi Peak. Enjoy the peaceful surroundings and spectacular mountain views before dinner and an overnight stay.
After breakfast, begin a short but steep climb up grassy slopes toward Mawenzi Tarn. The ascent is rewarded with spectacular panoramic views across the surrounding wilderness.
As you climb higher, the vegetation gradually disappears and the landscape changes to a rugged alpine environment. Continue toward Mawenzi Tarn Camp, located in a spectacular cirque beneath the towering spires of Mawenzi Peak.
The camp is situated near a beautiful alpine tarn surrounded by dramatic volcanic scenery. After lunch, take time to rest and enjoy the unique surroundings before dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 4 is an additional acclimatization day included in the 7-day itinerary. You will spend a second night at Mawenzi Tarn, allowing your body more time to adjust to the increasing altitude before continuing toward Kibo.
After breakfast, enjoy an acclimatization hike toward the Mawenzi Peak area. The hike provides spectacular views of the surrounding landscape and offers an excellent opportunity to gradually adapt to the higher elevation.
Return to camp for lunch and spend the afternoon resting and enjoying the mountain scenery. Dinner and overnight stay will be at Mawenzi Tarn Camp.
Note: The 6-day Rongai Route itinerary skips this acclimatization day and continues directly from Mawenzi Tarn toward Kibo Hut.
After an early breakfast, leave Mawenzi Tarn and cross the vast lunar landscape of the Saddle, the high desert between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.
The trail gradually crosses this stark and impressive alpine desert before reaching Kibo Hut at approximately 4,695 m / 15,404 ft. Upon arrival, enjoy lunch and spend the remainder of the day resting and preparing for the summit attempt.
Your guide will brief you on the summit climb, and you will prepare your warm clothing, headlamp, water, and other essential equipment. An early bedtime is recommended because the summit attempt begins around midnight.
Your summit day begins around midnight with a light breakfast before starting the challenging ascent toward Uhuru Peak. The goal is to reach the summit around sunrise, when the surrounding landscape is at its most spectacular.
Begin climbing through steep scree and, depending on weather conditions, possible snow toward Gilman’s Point on the crater rim at approximately 5,681 m / 18,638 ft. After a short rest, continue along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak.
The final section takes approximately 1–2 hours, depending on conditions and your pace. Upon reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 m / 19,341 ft, you will have reached the highest point in Africa.
Take some time to celebrate your achievement and take photographs, depending on how you are feeling and the weather conditions. After the summit experience, begin the descent toward Kibo Hut, where you will have lunch and a chance to rest.
After collecting your equipment, continue descending across the saddle toward Horombo Hut. Arrive at Horombo in the afternoon or evening, where you will enjoy dinner and spend your final night on the mountain.
After a well-deserved night’s rest, enjoy breakfast and prepare for your final descent from Mount Kilimanjaro.
Begin by descending through the moorland toward Mandara Hut, where you can stop for lunch and a short rest. Continue through the lush montane forest toward Marangu Gate.
The lower sections of the trail can be wet and muddy, particularly during rainy conditions, so trekking poles and gaiters are recommended. Keep your rain gear accessible in case of changing weather.
At Marangu Gate, complete the park exit formalities and collect your Kilimanjaro summit certificate. Say goodbye to your mountain crew before meeting your vehicle for the drive back to your hotel in Moshi.
Upon arrival, enjoy a well-deserved hot shower and celebrate your successful 7-day Rongai Route climb and achievement of reaching Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.
